Shirts and T-shirts are the most used clothing type in different parts of the world. Almost all the men follow this but there are many varieties of clothing when it comes to ladies. However, in some organizations and companies, both men and women should wear shirts compulsory as a part of their dress code. So have you ever observed the alignment of buttons on ladies shirts? Men’s shirt buttons are placed on the right side of the shirt with a corresponding button hole on the left side while women’s shirt buttons are placed on the left side and corresponding button hole on the right side. So what is the reason behind this and what difference does it make?
Here’s the actual reason:
It is an age-old practice which is being used even today. Buttons were quite a lot expensive and hence considered as a status symbol. Thus, rich women who could afford fancy clothing also roped in maids to handle their complicated outfits. In order to make it easy for servants ( who are mostly right-handed) designers preferred the buttons on their right side (which would be the left side of a woman’s shirt). This is why women’s shirt buttons are placed on the left side.
Coming to men’s case, most of them are right-handed and don’t use servants. So, the buttons are placed traditionally on the right side itself.
